hand techniques

Fist - Jumeok

The fist is an important weapon in Taekwondo, a strong fist can cause external and internal damage to your attacker when used correctly.

Punching - Jireugi

When punching we rotate the fist in towards our attacker striking with the two largest knuckles.  The rotation creates a vortex action and can cause internal damage to your attacker.  Punches should always to used to strike areas of the body where they will make the most affect.  Aiming at a number of nerves in the face, striking the solar plexes in the middle of the chest when the body is open to attack and aiming at areas of the body to cause damage to the kidneys when in close combat.

hammerFist

me Jumeok

The fist can be used in a downward striking action to target areas such as the nose or through strikes whilst controlling your attacker on the ground for example.  It is a great technique as you can hit hard and not damage your hand therefore requires less training and understanding than throwing a punch correctly.

backFist

deung Jumeok

The Back Fist can be used to strike downward - striking to target areas such as the nose or it can be used as a reverse back fist or side striking back fist and aimed at the temples .  It is a great technique to use as a set up strike or to redirect your opponents attention as you set up a more powerful option.

The spinning back fist is also a great technique to use as it is often hard to read when you step in towards your opponent.

palm strike

batangson Chigi

Batangson (Palm Strike).  In this technique it is important to bend your hand at the wrist to move your knuckles towards your forearm, thereby exposing the palm section of your hand.  Your fingers should all be together so you are not putting them in danger of being injured or catching on something during the strike.  The thumb is also pulled towards the hand unlike the Khal Jaebi strike.

It can be a very effective technique as you are able to use your full force with little risk of your own injury.  This strike can be used to aim towards such areas as the chin as seen in the Black Belt Poomsae - Koryo.

As well as using Batangson as a strike it can also be used as a blocking technique.  This can be seen in the Red Belt Poomsae - Taegeuk 7.

Y Hand strike

khal Jaebi

Khal Jaebi is used for striking such areas the throat or down onto the knee cap (Mureup Kukki) - both as seen in the Black Belt Poomsae Koryo.

This is the only open hand strike where the thumb is away from the other fingers in the hand and not tucked in.  This is because this strike uses the knuckle of the forefinger to strike your attacker.

A very deadly and effective strike to stun your attacker and distract them to weaken their attack so you are able to launch yours more successfully.

knife hand strike

sonnal chigi

Sonnal Chigi (Knife Hand Strike) can be used in many ways for defence against your attacker.  The hand is flattened, keeping the fingers tightly together and the thumb tucked in to prevent injury to it should it catch anything during the strike.

As a strike it can be used to strike areas of the body such as the carotid artery on the side of the neck.  This artery carries blood to the brain, a strike to this area can cause your attacked to become very dazed which in return will allow you to carry out your defence and disrupt their attack.

It is also used for blocking and can seen in Poomsaes as Sonnal Momtong Makki (Knife Hand Body Block) or as Hansonnal Bakkat Makki (Single Knife Hand Outside Body Block).

It starts to appear in Poomsae's from Taegeuk 4 onwards.
